Pretense of Elegance

         H&M dress

“Mama, you smell of citrus fruit,” said the five year old playing with the only pair of dazzling chandelier earrings. She didn’t reply, as she was too busy getting ready. Prepared for the night, she left the one room apartment and headed towards a world where she was a regular guest.

Her heels clicked on the polished marble floor and her body smelt of the fruity bath that she had lavishly taken an hour ago. The clinging nude dress enhanced her curvaceous body and the plunging neckline boasted of firm breasts. She swayed and glided across the lobby and was aware of her effect as numerous eyes gaped at her.

She entered the hall and hesitated. She opened her purse and reapplied lipstick that brought color to her blackened lips. After having done so, she smacked her full lips and observed the elite crowd. Her big brown eyes searched for someone. It seemed like a weary task. The bags under her eyes were visible even under layers of make up. She adjusted her black curls and made her way to the other end of the room.

Champagne glasses clinked, laughter roared and smokes of cigars filled the air. Paying no heed, she walked to the bar without an escort. She felt the fabric of rich silk as a lady passed by. The silk felt smooth and milky on her coarse hands. As a gentleman walked by, the soft feel of his tuxedo brushed her dry shoulders.

She ordered for whiskey on the rocks and focused her attention on the women. Too tall, too skinny, too fat, too old...She felt better. A new dress, heavy make up and borrowed shoes that were too tight, she felt like a shiny new penny just out from the mint.

She scanned the crowd for prospective and generous customers. She boldly made eye contacts as men passed by. She did not have to wait long, she never did. A fine-looking gentleman came to refill his drink. As he headed back to his group she was walking alongside in his arms.

She was introduced as Emma. She didn’t mind, that name had class and she liked it. As the conversation resumed, she pretended to be engaged in it. She was a natural actress. Time and experience had made her that way. The stock market, the global politics, and private islands in the Caribbean…she laughed the hardest when a joke was delivered.

The hall shimmered with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires. As she laughed and smiled, her zircon chandelier earrings sparkled and swayed to and fro. To her they were like rare costly diamonds. Anyhow, who could tell the difference, she always thought.

But she knew, the world could cruelly scrutinize a solitaire and set it either on a platinum ring or dispose of it effortlessly. That is why she had no trouble finding customers. The men in the group knew, their wives knew and the fine-looking gentleman knew. So why the pretense, she thought!

She left the gala with the fine-looking gentleman, arm in arm, laughing and giggling.

She was cold as she lay on the cozy featherlike bed. Whiffs of citrus fruit lingered in the suite.

Watch what they do, not what they say (Chapter 37. Page 145)

        TFNC dress

In his book ‘The Last Lecture’, Randy Pausch has left some advice for his daughter, Chloe and for young ladies everywhere. Pausch’s female colleague shared this with him. “When it comes to men who are romantically interested in you, it’s really simple. Just ignore everything they say and only pay attention to what they do.”

I have never met Pausch but I feel I know him. ‘The Last Lecture’ emphasizes on really achieving your childhood dreams. It has left a deep impact on me and his words constantly play in my mind. They have inspired me on different levels. His life has guided, strengthened and encouraged me. In his book, I have found a friend and a mentor.

I am never letting go of my childhood dreams no matter how bizarre or unattainable they may seem. I will strive to achieve them.

Read the book and see what unfolds unto you!

Grown Up

                                       Atmosphere dress, H&M sandals

 I was devastated
I was confused
I was angry
I was hurt
I still am…

But I forgive you
Maybe…
this is
what they call
Maturity

Easy to say
Easier to advice
Effortless to pretend
Difficult to execute
Exhausting to practice

Sneaked In!

Forever 21 skirt, silk top, H&M sandals

I welcome all seasons with open arms but I think the winters sneaked in on us this year. Arriving a little too early, it sure is making its presence felt with foggy mornings, surprise drizzles and chilly nights.

But I refuse to acknowledge its presence. I still have a closet full of colors- flirty skirts, lace shorts, orange animal-print shirt and my favorite mustard shorts that have yet to be worn.

I shall not bow down…not yet! Although, I have prepared for it- chirpy coat (nickname given by my friend Yeshi), patch coat, biker’s jacket and Victoria Beckham’s sexy tux. So, Winter wait for your turn!

Is Time Relative?

Asos dress (sold out), Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss Palette, Roberta di Camerino heels,
Louis Vuitton Damier Azur Canvas Handbag

Since the age of five, I have been conditioned to promptly answer to a bell. Ring- wake up, Ring- pray, Ring- study, Ring- eat, Ring- talk, Ring- stop talking, Ring- play, Ring- wash up, Ring- sleep and the ringing episodes continue at St. Joseph’s Convent.

As ridiculous as it may sound, this bell conditioning made me value time, my own as well as others. It drives me up the wall when people do not respect time. My patience runs dry after five minutes of the set appointment. Giving excuses like “Sorry, got stuck in traffic” or “Nepali time” is absolutely intolerable. Traffic in Nepal is inevitable and ‘Nepali time’…what excuse is that? For all I know, we live in the same time zone. Professional work ethics needs some serious upgrading. I don’t belong to ‘Nepali time’ category, do you?

S Kat

A bright sunny day it was and my thoughts were as gay as the warm weather
That was the first time I laid my eyes on the unprepossessing minuscule kat
Uneven body and protruding belly, all melded beneath the sun kissed pelt
A gleaming collar revealing an affluent life encircled its scrawny neck
We crossed paths, formal and courteous we were before I walked on

To and fro - it shadowed me and I for one couldn’t understand why
Dissecting its every move, I then saw more than the eyes could meet
A warm smile that filled my heart with glee, chivalry that won my approval
Innocent eyes that charmed and enthralled me, it awed me with its wit and humor
I was glued to it as it was to me, and soon my life revolved round this kat

We went fishing on a silver boat that glowed like a full moon on black magic nights
We dined on heavenly cuisine, which even the gods were tempted to wildly indulge
With a mediocre voice it sang to me, while I daydreamed about a song that did not exist
With awkward moves it danced with me, while I grooved to a melody that did not exist.
It cooked for me just like Papa did, drawing parallels that should never have been

What was so irresistible that drew me closer and closer to it every passing day
Was it a fresh habit that had become old, and hence difficult to get freed from
Was it a new acquired addiction that tranquilized me compelling me to succumb
The day I had my answer, it left me- no emotions visible in those cold eyes
The mind never failed to play tricks- always questioning and poking around

A camouflage that peeled off a little too late of which I did not have a faintest doubt
Catching me off-guard, it knocked me off my feet and took me forever to get back up
Had I not seen signs- yes scrutinizing at first and then guiltily discarding them as trivial
A void and nothingness seeped in crawling and filling every inch of me with darkness
Was it a figment of imagination- promises made and valuable words proffered

Nonetheless life is the same as was on those bright days with weather so warm and gay
Fishing on black magic nights still glows with the illuminating silver moon high up
Songs still have the rhythm of treble and clef; dance still has the soul of a carefree child
But me- the past has dug a wound so deep; the present visualizes a lingering scar
And the future is envisioned with wiser eyes- open to mistakes but never to falter

Drive

H&M shirt, Atmosphere shorts, H&M bag, Ray-Ban aviator

I am not a workaholic but I have a hectic work schedule and if you love what you do then it’s not really work, is it? I managed to squeeze in a movie on a workday just to prove to my suspicious friend that I have no addiction.

Drive is one of the best movies I have watched in a while. Ryan Gosling was phenomenal and the soundtrack of the movie is ‘addictive.’ I loved ‘A Real Hero’ by College feat. Electric Youth. I have been repeatedly humming the tune in my not-so-flattering voice. Addiction is a funny thing!

Floating Dreams

                                    H&M pleated mesh dress

                                    Atmosphere blouse, Atmosphere chino pants

                                    H&M patch blazer (available soon)

It has been over a year since my friend and I have been discussing prospective ventures over thousand cups of coffee and uncountable pieces of creamy cheesecakes. Like any young hearts, there were a zillion projects we wanted to undertake but one that kept surfacing was fashion.

An inception of virtual ideas put together has finally manifested into reality and is no more floating in our heads. Empty closet is a high street fashion line that will be launched later this year under the umbrella of Fmirror.

Empty closet is in an endeavor to bring quality and fashionable clothing at affordable prices that will not drill a hole in your wallet. A woman’s closet is never full… so ladies, gear yourselves to fill your closets!
